Missing GB's

Hi

My laptop has a 40gb hard drive, and it says that I have 2.85gb spare.
Thing is I should have more than this, when I go into the c:drive and highlight all the folders and look at the properties it say I'm only using 26.9gb.
Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks

There are lots of files that don't show up that way. For instance, i'm using 67.2GB of my hard drive, however when I select the files, it says I only have 64GB used. The main reason is because the paging file isnt included when you select only the folders.

If you want to see how much space is really used, right click on the hard drive and select "properties".

You can use disk cleanup if you would like to regain some free space.

The properties say the same. So I guess thats all I've got. I think whats happened is I was putting a film on DVD with Nero Recode and my laptop crashed near the end and I cant find the temp folder and file it was using. As before this I had more space.
You wouldnt know what the temp file would be called so I can delete it.

Thanks for your time

is it a pre-built? i find that a lot of the time there are multiple partitions on my friends pre-built pcs. i dont know why they do it, but if you backup your data and reformat it using the windows xp disc it ought to take care of the problem.

Its only happened today, thats what makes me think theres the Nero tempory file somewhere. Dont know where though

Most of them are used to hold the data for the recovery CD, so users can "restore" their computers to factory conditions.

I would check in these places:

Programs Files > Ahead
Documents and Settings > User Name > Application Data > Ahead (enable hidden files).

Or you can download some disk cleaners that search for temporary files, which should find that and delete it.

Hi

Dont know what I've done but it seems to be ok now. The disk cleaner must of worked.
Thanks for your and paitence.
