Missing VSSVC.EXE Process

So, recently I decided to upgrade my crap 240 gb harddrive to something a bit bigger. So I found myself a larger Hard drive, and decided to grab an usb Hard Drive connecter as well. Instead of reinstalling everything, I tried cloning my current hard drive, using various programs.

But I can't. It always comes up with some generic error, with the text "Missing VSSVC.EXE" Or something similar. I tried searching around, but that's where things gets odd. I can't find a process with said name. VSS is the shadow clone process, and it is up and running, but it doesn't remedy the issue, and said name doesn't match with the error I constantly get.

I tried a few hours yesterday, and nothing seemed to work. Can anyone assist me with this?

I have tried using Runtime's Shadow Copy, DriveImage XML, **EASE**US** Todo Backup, and PC Clone Ex . The last one doesn't work, because the USB connected Hard Drive isn't recognized as a USB drive - It is recognized as a standard Hard Disk Drive. I'm assuming it would hit the same brick wall as the rest, because Shadow Clone is still the process that allows the copying of the HDD to begin with, right?

And finally, yes, I do have administrative rights.

And also, if this shadow clone process just wont work, can anyone give me some advise on free or cheap programs to make a boot-transfer? Through some sort of Dos based interface on startup, before windows is initialized? I'm just thinking shadow clone would be pretty redundant if I could manage to tranfer it without even accessing my HDD in the first place, but I have yet to find any programs that really seem to work the way I want them to. Perhaps the issue is the fact that I'm using an USB connector? It claims it doesn't require a driver, and it actually shows up on my listed devices in the boot up menu, but I'm guessing some programs would probably have issues with it, or no?

I just really, REALLY don't want to go through the trouble of making a clean install.... all the games, drivers, everything... ugh...

Sadly, I have... didn't work. Finally opted to use Win7's original Backup image, and recovery CD to use the repair function, but sadly, all I was met with was a stupid "This version of Windows doesn't support this recovery disc" -somethingish. Stupid, considering I never even got to the point where I choose which HDD I wanted to repair. In fact, all I manged to do, was choose language - I never even told it to repair in the first place.

I had an external HDD with the backup image. A Recovery disc I made after finishing the windows backup tool just 5 minutes before attempting to clone the HDD, and the new harddrive, empty, formatted to a NFTS format, and completely clean otherwise. It could be easily found from the boot menu.

So in short, I had an empty HDD in the primary drive, an external drive with the system image, tried both with it plugged in and not plugged in, and the recovery disc. And the first thing this stupid recovery disc says, is that this isn't the correct version of Windows. Clever, I didn't even have a HDD with Windows installed plugged in.

Called Windows, and their only response was that I should try make a new one. I did, and it was the same result. He could only tell me to try again. I really couldn't believe I was talking to Windows Support there. How can such a huge company suck this bad at customer support?

*sigh* Oh well, have to contact Windows, AGAIN. My copy of windows isn't from a physical CD, but an upgrade from a pre-installed Windows Basic(I think the "lite" version is called?), which I upgraded online. I never had an install disc to begin with, and the recovery discs I make through Windows' own programs never work. And Windows wonders why people pirate their crap... Having spend so much money on their ultimate edition Windows 7, I must say, the support I get from Windows is below par with most anything I have ever experienced.
