Mixing different sizes of RAM

I have an ECS L4VXA2 motherboard with two 256MB ram cards. I want to upgrade the RAM and was wondering if I can add a single 512MB RAM card to the existing two 256MB since I have one open slot? On the ECS website, it says "Supports DDR400 (conditional) / DDR333" What does conditional mean? What would happen if I have the DDR333 in there now and I put in a 512MB DDR400? How can I tell which type I have now? Thanks

they can be different pin counts. otherwise, most motherboards support mixing 512 with 256mb and so on... as long as you dont mind running them at the slowest stick's speed. lets say one has specs of ddr266 2-2-2-5 and one has specs of ddr500 3-3-3-8 though... that means they run at ddr266 3-3-3-8 which isnt good. anyways, they also don't run dual channel. so generally, you save some money, but in some cases you lose a lot of performance.
what are the specs of the chips you plan on using?
link us if you can.

I found out I have (Non-parity DDR PC3200). what does that mean? If I get a single 512 stick of the same DDR-PC3200, would that be ok?
