Mixing RAM??

Hi,

I am upgrading my computer (desperately need to)and I need some advice. I currently have 256MB (133MHz) RAM (how crap is that!!!!) and I want to stick in another 512. I was looking at a single stick of 512 (400Mhz).

Now, my question is. If I stick them both in, will the 400MHz drop to 133MHz?? If so, would I get better preformance if I just took out the 256meg and used it as a doorstop or what??

Thanks for any replies.

My Specs: P4 2.4 Northwood
256MB RAM
40Gig HDD
FX5200
5.1 Card
DL DVD-RW

the mb might not even support pc3200 maybe maybe not even 2100 since it is 133mhz like you said. if i remember pc133 isnt ddr ram.

Isn't sdram pc133 a 168 pin module and the ddr is a 184 pin module...I didn't think the slot would be the same for sdram and ddr....

So if thats ur MOBO than u have ddr 266 (remember it's double) pc 2100 on ur MOBO now...

So now u have to decide if u want 512 of pc 2700 or 768 of pc 2100

i say u drop the old stuff.. and go for 512MB PC2700 (256MBx2).. if thats the highest ur MoBo will handle then get the PC2700.. but u should just get a new Motherboard so that you can upgrade a lil better/more!! but if u dont want to buy a new mobo.. then go for the Dual Channel 512MB PC2700..
