My 500gb backup HDD which had like under 200gigs filled.
Was some how formatted....

I dont recall doing such a thing.
i right click properties on it and 0bytes.

Any one know what happen or how to get the stuff back for that matter.

I don't think there is anyway besides pricey data recovery. Are you sure it formatted? Try hooking it up through a different IDE port. I've never heard of a drive formating itself.

it should... unless you click on "Format" under PM8 then it will keep all data intact... if you HAVE to format, then you could use Get Data Back NT after you format and recover all of the data

Hell NO!!!! Use software recovery apps. Use get data back but you need another drive to put the recovered files on to. Do not use partition magic or the like. When you write to that drive it may write over your stored data! Also with Get Data Back you need a registered ver or it will just show you the files it can recover but won't recover them.
