Mobo change.

Hi,
Could you tell me of an inexpensive mobo which would transplant straight into my 2001 HP AMD Athlon XP 3000+ so that I could get a better but cheap cpu which performs far better than the present chip.
Thanks for your time, I've asked this elsewhere but probably not in the right place. I'm not a computer expert.
Regards,
Bill.

Unfortunately, its not all that simple. The hardware is way too old. You are basically looking at a new system. You would need different memory anyways. You would need a fresh install of Windows which means the OEM license from HP would not be able to be transferred to the motherboard. Look for an AMD am3 motherboard, CPU, hard drive, new Windows operating system and memory.

Pointless exercise to upgrade your box for what it would cost, you may as well buy a new box cause it would probably be cheaper.

Example:

DESKTOP DUAL CORE 3.2GHZ 8GB RAM 250GB HDD DVD Writer (NO OS)
£200 Cheap as chips... LOOK HERE

Add a half descent graphics card like a "GEFORCE GT 430 1GB PCI-E" for £55 LOOK HERE

So for £255 you can get a banging PC cheap that will pretty much play any game, run any application, has HDMI connection and is pretty quick. And if you spent even more on the graphics card you could run games at the highest quality possible.

Athlon XP 3000 was a Socket 462/A. The fastest processor was a XP Athlon 3200. Performance wise there would be no point upgrading anyway. And like johnb35 said, your looking at a processor/motherboard and memory upgrade. That is if you can still use your old harddrive. More then likely a power supply too.
