i have a cheap ecs mobo, it was like $55. it works for what i need, i've never had any problems with it, but i want to upgrade. my friend is selling an ASUS crosshair (original) for $30. i have a Phenom II 940, i hear the performance will be slightly less, but i dont really care because i will be able to sli with the new board. do you think i should buy it?

Well according to the asus site, if you had the original crosshair then the cpu support list said it doesn't support it. Are you sure you got the specific model correct?

^^yessir, original asus cross hair, when he first used it it said unknown cpu, but he did a bios update and now it recognizes it and he can OC and everything

Mmmm, thats weird. Because according to Asus the only crosshair board that supported the 940 was the crosshair II formula.

yea, but whatever. also, i have 1066 ram, and the board supports 800, will it not work, or will it just underclock the ram?

ok, thanks for the help. so do you think i should buy it? i dont game that much anymore, and if i do its COD4 or 6 so not to resource demanding, more of a media center pc. i just like the second pcie slot so i can run more monitors, cause i already got 2 and my tv hooked up, but my tv is using a pci gfx card, like 8mb iirc

That Asus crosshair should be much better than your cheap ecs board. I would buy it. I don't know who is telling you that it would be lower performance though.

The reason is the HT speed and memory. It will back clock 1066 to 800 and drop the HT to 1000/2000. Its HT is 800/1600 or 1000/2000, the 940 has 1800/3600. But overall its not going to make that much difference.

You could actually just use your bus to overclock instead of the X with your CPU and get the memory and HT speed up. Just set your memory voltage and timing to what is suppost to be a 1066 and bump up your HT voltage.

Its a wonder your ECS runs that 940. It only supports up to 95W processors.

Note: This board supports CPU up to 95W TDP only; you can refer to AMD website to check your CPU.
