1. In short a motherboard connects all of your other components together (RAM, CPU, hard drives, disc drives, video card, sound card)

2. No it has to be a certain kind or processor that is compatible with that motherboard.

3. No it will only take components that are compatible with it, but you do have many different options for which components you buy since there are a lot that are compatible with any motherboard.

There are various types of main system boards for different types of systems. You build a system around the board selected by first looking over the specifications. For server applications mainly seen in the business world or communications some boards run multiple processors while the average desktop sees only one.

For cpus there are several manufacturers with Intel and AMD being the leaders. The socket type whether AMD or Intel determines what model cpus can be used. There are varying types of memory and video cards as well.
 
Their are many variations of processors that go into motherboards depending on their socket. A socket is a slot which has a grid of pin openings that safely inserts a processor. A processor has to have the same socket as the motherboard. Motherboards also have slots for memory or RAM(Random Access Memory). That also has to be compatible to the board type.
