im looking into an Asus AM2 mobo. It says it has DDR2 800 standard. Now does that mean I can only use DDR2 800 ram?

you can use DDR2 800 or anything above that. mobo's will run faster ram, but not slower.
Nope. Motherboards can run slower RAM, and they only take advantage of faster RAM's speed through overclocking the FSB (or HTT for K8)

In other words just try to look for DDR2 800 RAM, other RAM (slower or faster) will work, but its the standard.
