Hey everyone, i got a Asus A8n-sli-premium right and i've got it all hooked up correctly i think and i tryed in and once it got going and all the fans and that were spining then i noticed some smoke coming from around the graphics card so i straight away turned it off and discounnected it.

can anyone help me with my little problem

i only had the power cord and the montior cord plug in at the time

Again thank you

i don't know if it was the graphics card, it was coming from around it, would it have been the heat sink on the graphics card??

it could be the graphics card, the heatsink might be loose and it was cooking. its difficult to tell to be honest. it could have been a chip on the mobo cooking or anything

coz i think i burnt my fingers on it :P:P

Think? i do you think you hurt yourself?

anyway, sorry that happened man, i had the same kinda thing happen to me.
try disconnecting everything and starting over or im not sure, i wouldnt turn it back on

did it boot up at all?
what did it do on the screen when it "smoked"?

take it apart and inspect the graphics card, does it smell like burnt electronics? does your mobo?

inspect the card for any visible signs of a blown circuit and also check your mobo for the same...go over it on both sides with a magnifying glass if you have to

if you see absolutly nothing out of the ordinary then I'd take the graphics card out of the machine and boot it (take out any extra ram you have) and turn it off if there is any smoke at all or you smell electrical fire (obviously)....if it's fried already, then nothing should happen...in which case you'd know it's the mobo

I've seen resistors light up red like LED's before they blow and melt apart, so make sure to keep your eye out for any lights that shouldn't be there

if it starts up fine and runs ok then it's probably your graphics card

And sorry I just have to ask this to make sure but did you place the motherboard standoffs? Forgetting to place these will result in a short.

whats a standoff? and is it normal to see a Green Led lite up on the motherboard and i don;t think it did boot up at all and i did take the graphics card out and smelt it it smelt a a little but not a whole lot

today i fired the computer up without the graphics card and the 2 512MB ram sticks and it fired up perfectly so i think it was the graphics card, woud be matter if the graphics card was screwed in or not?? coz i would screw it in but the bracket on the graphics card and the case screw hole don't align up and i don't want to force it to in case it damges it, well this damage the the graphics card if i force it????

no that screw wouldnt make your graphics card smoke. So i take it you used your integrated graphics when you fired up your computer or did you use another graphics card? Also take a flashlight and look inside your Agp/pci(wherever you plug your video card in) and make sure there is nothing in the slot, chances are probly not, but theres no harm in checking!

yea that green led indicates your computer has power to the motherboard

oh ok and no the mother board does'nt have a integrated graphics board i just ran it with connecting the montior to see if it would smoke if i did'nt use the graphics card and it did'nt

Yea do what he says about the scorch marks and tell us what you find. Also make sure the heat sink is securely on the GPU.

ok, there does'nt seem to be anything wong with the graphics card i don't think i had it all the way into the PCIe would that have made it smoke ??

hey everyone i figureedout the problem and fixed it i forgot to put the standoffs on, i'm a newbi this is my first computer i've built, would i have wrecked the motherboard now??

its a possibility, when something starts to smoke it means something is getting way too hot, if the motherboard is broken and its new you may be able to get away with an RMA
