okay so i got my new rigg i'm runnning the asus P5k-e wifi-ap edition i've upgraded the bios to the newest versoin and it still dosent detect either of my DVD rom's as throught the IDE i need some help please.
it only detects the virtual ATAPI CD-rom

Make sure the DVD-ROMs are set to Master/Slave and also make sure you are using a hard drive style IDE cable (40 pin/80 conductor).
Make sure the DVD-ROMs are getting power. If the DVD panel light blinks during post then they are getting power.
Lastly, check in the motherboard BIOS to make sure the IDE channel is enabled.

Good luck!

they are getting power during post, i have 1 set as master and 1 slave via jumpers, i am useing the correct IDE cable.

as for in the bios i dont even see anything related to IDE, all i see is my 6 SATAS' i dont see the 1 IDE..

I just read through the manual for the motherboard.
It should automatically detect the DVD-ROMs but they will not be listed on the main BIOS page.
Try going to the boot order section in the BIOS to see if they are listed there.
If they are, then it's a Windows issue if you have it installed already.
Maybe try a different optical drive on the Asus board or try the DVD drives on a different machine.
If the other optical drive does not show up on the Asus and the DVD drives work in a different machine, then it's possible the IDE port is dead (not unusual).

Good luck!

there is no windows its a fresh rig, it detects a atapi cd-rom what is clearly a defult virtual cd rom in the boot order sectoin, i have tried 2 differnt drives in there 1 of witch is working in my other rig. so i know the drives are good.

i think it might be a dead IDE port. sigh* this rig ahs given me hell

the P5K Premium has a lot of SATA/ide compatibility problems, a lot of DOAs, and a lot of general wonkery.
Try going into the BIOS to see if they are listed there, If they arent try going into every ide channel thats listed and do an auto search for the drive

my MSI board would not recognize the drives in bios without both the proper master/slave configurations and drive placement on the 80-pin ide cable. make sure you're ABSOLUTELY sure you did this properly

RMA it if possible.
If that board is having problems, then I would try to get a different board.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a different brand because every manufacturer has produced a piece of hardware that ended up giving them a black eye.
Asus is still one of the best manufacturers of motherboards.

Good luck!
