Modem not compatible with router??

OK so I'm learning more and more that I know less and less about computers all the time...

Just purchased a Netgear WGT624v2 wireless router so I can get the notebook running with the desktop. Apparently the Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem I have had for a few years now does not have a compatible ip designation. Have googled "change ip address on speed touch home", got a lot of hits but no information a bozo could clearly understand. Does anyone out there know of an EASY way to reassign the ip address for the modem??

Think that you are trying to do the following:

Route wireless traffic through router to your main machine
Route traffic onwards to Internet (and back again).

The wireless hardware will use one set of addresses 192.168.*.*, and your Speedtouch will have been allocated a fixed or variable ip based on your ISP's offering.

Using the hardware you have suggests you need two routers. One to route from wireless and one to route over the DSL internet connection.

This can be done with a software based router on the main machine, but setup wouldn't be described as "simple", particularly if your ISP is providing a variable IP address when you connect.

Best option is to sell both items and get hold of a combined wireless router and DSL gateway. Linksys offer such a unit, which would be relatively easy for a beginner to set up.

Yes I called them, they're the one's who told me the modem and router were not compatible... Couldn't spring for a wireless modem router in one so I went out and got a compatible modem last night... Still can't connect through the router though, straight through the modem works well... Plan on ringing Netgear today for some support.

BTW. ISP is Netspace, they have been very patient but they can only offer so much support for third party equipment.
