Modem or router

Hello all. I'm getting a new place very soon and we're setting up the internet, and my roommate called the provider and they said we either need a modem or router. (He forgot which one they said) Which would it probably be? ie which one do they usually provide?

The internet guy also said we could rent one of these (Whichever one they didn't provide) for like, $5-7 a month. Would it be better just to buy one? Especially if I can just reuse it later?

The internet provider will provide a modem for you, you will have to provide a router and yes its much cheaper to buy one then to rent every month.

All you need is a router better that renting one, just like what johnb35 the internet provider will give you a modem for it is included on their service.

Yes, I think you'd better buy a Wireless Router so that you can connect to internet either through wire or wireless.
