Modem question.

I have recently noticed a port for modem to connect via a usb cable into my computer. Although I have my computer coming off a router and one other. When I did this windows installed drivers but I have nothing to adjust or tweak or anything. So, my question is:

What is the purpose of having my modem hooked into my computer through this usb cable?

edit: side question- Anyone know of any good modems? I have to computers and internet phone (VoIP) I currently lease this one and would prefer to own, and now use a router.

So you're asking whats the point of having a USB cord from your router to your computer? Instead of ethernet? :P

Some computers already/don't have an ethernet port available. So Using USB is a second option.

I hope I understood the question correctly...

My modem is connected to the router and my router to my computers, is there any reason to have my computer hooked up to the modem through a usb cable, if so, why?

Nope, the reason for the USB is that it is an alternative for people who don't know their way around a computer. Although the ethernet cable is quicker, the USB has became a well known thing and it is basically "idiot-proof".

Right, anything else? I am starting to become pretty familiar with Networking, do you have a stereotypical image of someone who is good at networking? It is always a fat dude that looks kinda like Bill Gates, Sorry for the random thought.

I look nothing like Bill Gates and am not fat, haha

Well I know a good deal of networking, just not home networking. :-P

If that makes sense. I just have never heard of this before, lol. I guess I assumed people would know how to hook up an Ethernet cord, lol.
