i have a BCM modem that works perfectly fine in my Dell Dimension 2300, its the modem that machine came with...when i try to put it in an older machine of mine it wont even recognize it...ive tried it in all the PCI slots on the older machine, and all of them work fine with other components such as a NIC...what could the problem be? the older machine is a 333mhz P2 OCed to 417, 128 RAM, running XP Pro...could my power supply possibly be causing it? its a 235 watt power supply running the cpu, mobo, HD,CD-ROM, floppy drive and thats pretty much it.

I would definitely discount the power supply as the cause of the problem. My guess is it could be a conflict between XP and the very old hardware that is running on this computer... BTW, how is that computer even functioning with that hardware on those components??? :)

You can force it to pick up the driver. Just Right click on my computer, and go to hardware. Then click on Device Manager. It should show a listing of all the hardware devices on the PC. Then click on Network Devices. See if you see the modem. If there is a ? by the hardware piece then try to reload the driver. If you have downloaded the driver just point it at the downloaded version. If not, you may need to download it or find the location of it on the other system. XP should be able to pick it up right away. If this doesn't seem to help give me a little more info. Does it keep asking for the driver even after you have picked the correct driver? The device Manger should tell you if it is "picking" up your driver or not.
