I personaly dont have the answer to this but If it where me I'd write down the settings it's using now and then just start changing things :-) trial and error basicly and as long as you know all the original settings you should be fine.

I think there should be a place on modems and such where you can configure it to automatically detect port settings
 
You can always set the maximum to the maximum available number ... whether it runs at that speed or not is something else :)
