Modifying a prebuilt computer

Hi, I was looking at some dell pc's to light game with and I was just curious if it better(and cheaper) to either buy an expensive pc at the start, say like xps 700 or get a base xps 410 model with a good processor, and install more ram, better psu, better graphics later yourself.

It's cheaper to buy all of the stuff at the start, at least then you base your computer round what you want it to do.
