Here's a crazy question. Where do you connect the monitor (blue connection) if you don't have a video card to supply you with that socket?

on your integrated video card on your motherboard. Also if you mean that u cant connect your monitor because your video card does not have the blue socket (CRT) you can get a DVI to CRT adapter.

i mean my mobo doesnt have a crt socket. i guess this means i will have to get one of those converters?? where can i get one available to the UK?

You dont. There are three common ways of connecting monitor display devices:
1. The DSUB15 ... this is your traditioal 15pin VGA
2. The LCD connector ... either directly or via convertor
3. Some monitors have component RGB(B) connectors (similar to projectors) that you can connect with.
