monitor dead or bigger problem?

when I turned my computer off last night it was working fine but thismorning i tried to turn it on and imediatly the scrren displays "cannot display this resolution". The computer is still starting up and loading into windows, I can tell because my logitech keyboard starts up as it should. Does anyone know what I should do? I figure its either my monitor that has died or Im facing a much larger problem.

By the way My Monitor is a 3 year old dell lcd.

Try switching your monitor to another computer and see if you have any issues with the monitor. I would also try using a different working monitor on your computer. It could be a video card problem.
