Monitor Display

I have an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop which is about a year old. For the past few months, the disply is not filling the entire screen as if it has shrunk. This leaves a black area down the right hand side and means approximately 20% of the screen is not displaying anything.

Does anyone know why this is? Is it a fault or do I need to adjust a setting?

Go into device manager and see what is listed for display adapter and post back with the information.

or right click on the desktop, click properties, go to the settings tab, click advanced, click the adapter tab, it should tell u what kind of video you have, nvidia, sis, intel, ati etc.. and you can go to the makers site and download the drivers

Ok, I've checked in Device Manager and when I click on Display adaptors I get Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family??

Searches on the model says the screen resolution is 1280 x 800. 1024 x 768 will give you black vertical bands, so I would visit the Acer site and as said above download the latest drivers to allow you the correct setting.

Should I be able to this for free? I don't understand why all of a sudden things changed and the screen size got smaller

Go here to Intel's site and download the latest drivers for that integrated video. Looks like Acer has outdated drivers for it. The video driver can become corrupt causing issues like this.
