monitor goes black

I have a Viewsonic PF790 flatscreen CRT monitor that is about 7 years old. It has been a great monitor but since i got a new computer with Windows XP on it whenever I cold boot or reboot my computer the monitor will go black for about 2 or 3 seconds right after it goes to the desktop and then it will flicker and then everything is fine. And, once in awhile it will go black for a few seconds, this has happened about once every couple days over the last month.

I have tried using factory latest drivers, plug and play drivers, i have changed the refresh rate to 62, 75, 85 and it still does it.

Is the monitor on its last leg and it is time to invest in a new monitor or what?

Thank you in advance for your input,

Are you overclocking? If you have nvidia, I know that if you choose apply overclock settings at startup, then it flickers abit when the frequencies are changed.

I would have to say that the monitor has probably had it, otherwise the video card may not be connected properly or firmly enough

CRTs should last really long, in fact I'm still using some really old 15" crt monitors to constantly display my network usage through my gateway.

Thanks for all the input everyone. But, I finally figured it out. It was caused by a progam on Acer's called Empower Management. So, I removed the program and all is well.
