monitor help

Ok, so I am new to these forums, but thought you guys could help me out. My friend had spyware on his computer, so he junked it and bought a new one. It's about a year old, good shape, so I picked it up from him for like $50 including all cables, cds, and a flat screen monitor. Brought the computer home, hooked it up, and the monitor displays for about 10 seconds and then I get a blank screen. Not the "no signal" screen. And the monitor is physically on...just no display. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas as to why this is happening. I tried the monitor on several computers and had the same results. My only possible idea is a bad resistor somewhere? Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks!

so this question is about the monitor and ot his old computer then right? Well I'd have to concur it's probably the monitor, have you tried other power and video cables though to make sure it's not one of them (thinking power if one of the two)? If they're fine, then something gets warm in the monitor and turns it off quite quick, I suppose you could bring it in to get it looked at, seems fixable if it still displays for awhile, but I wouldn't try do do anything myself, if it's a crt you could get a bad shock, and if it's lcd it's just too complicated for you to be able to do anything with it.

well the video cable is attached to the monitor so i can't try switching that cable, but tried switching power cables and connected it to another computer with the exact same results. but i think you might be on to something. i think if there is a bad resistor, then too much voltage is going through a particular circuit. and maybe its a safety feature that it turns off so it doesn't explode or something....
