Monitor/Limit Internet

For my LANs, I am using a home connection, I want to assure myself that nothing personal can be found when people connect to my internet.

Is there a program or something that can help me.

Thanks.

firewall? wouldnt that do it? and even if it didnt... wouldnt they only be able to access your shared documents?

Do you mean block people from your PC, not actually limit the access to the internet right?

If you're doing this at your house I'm sure you can trust your friends, but you should obviously make sure that file and print sharing is disabled, install a decent inbound/outbound firewall, and restrict permissions on certain folders.

I have nothing personal on my new hard drive with Vista.
I am worried a little that my parents enter online information, and is that saved somewhere on our router?

I have the router protected so no one can log in on the router settings.

I know a few people, but I advertise everywhere, and get people I don't entirely know.

So, what can people access connected to my internet connection. They may be advanced and know what to do.

suddenly your posts are getting a little hard to read. first of all, nothing like that gets stored on your router. second of all, all the protection in the world cant stop someone who is truly determined and has the know-how to get your information. the smartest thing to do is just that: be smart. only enter personal info into secure websites, encrypt wireless, use a firewall, dont broadcast your SSID, so on and so forth.

It's your PC that stores the saved website data and forum/password info, if someone else connects to your router and goes to computerforum.com for instance, they will not see your login information.

you have nothing to worry about unless you show someone something...but if you're nervous right click your connection icon and in the properties unclick File and Print Sharing

Not enough information, people are connecting to your internet? What does that mean? Explain the set up, then we can answer your questions.

From my understanding, he is having everyone connect to a switch, and the switch is either connected to a router which is connected to the modem, or the modem is a combo device.

Well, if the router is acting as DNS, DHCP, then yeah they are all on the same network and if file sharing is enabled you are giving them access. Also, if a self propagating malicious file is on one client, it could spread to others.

Alright, I am going to have it set up to where the internet is coming from the modem, to the switch, then everyone just connects to the switch.

My other question is, I have a 2Wire Router I use to use. Can I connect it to the switch and have other people connect to the 2Wire router and have it work with the switch.
The 2Wire router would be in another room, so people aren't running wires everywhere.

Thanks.

OK, maybe you didn't understand what I was saying.

Your router is most likely acting as a DNS and DHCP server, this is standard configuration. When all your friends or whomever connect to your switch or wireless or anything else that is hooked to your router they are automatically on your network.

OK.
How would I fix any problems that may occur?

Do I use a dedicated computer, or just the one that has the problem..

You don't need a dedicated computer, having one is pointless for just a few PC's and Consoles connected to the switch.

Could you explain one last time what the problem is that you are having?
