Monitor problem

I have a friend who is having trouble with her computer. When she turns her computer on, the monitor displays the self check test and then goes into power save mode. What could she do to fix this?

Does the computer stay on and continue to boot? Or, does it sound inactive (no disk access sounds)? Or, does the computer also shut off around the same time the monitor does?

the fan kicks on and it goes into power save mode. There is no desktop visible,no access to command line, or anything.

yes. it seems to be. you can hear the fan running, but you never see anything but the self check test on the screen

I agree with Stoic Sentinel. If you happen to have a spare graphics card lying around, or one you can borrow from another PC, I recommend doing a swap (if you have a card) or just plugging one in (if you have onboard video).
