Monitor Resolution Questions-Reformatted Dell

I reformatted a friends xp machine and I need the drivers for the monitor from Dell. i downloaded and ran them, but I still can't adjust the resolution above 640x480. When I go into device manager the "VGA Controller" has the famed yellow exclamation mark beside it. How do I get the drivers for the vga controller since that is apparently the problem, and I don't see them on Dell's site. The pc is a dimension 2400 and the monitor is an e773c.

drivers tell computers what they are allowed to do, basically it sets the limits for them

It does not really "set the limit" for them. The card itself does. You could play a bunch of games with different types of GFX drivers, they'll play the same. It's the hardware that sets the limits for them ;)

Most likely you'll need the sound card drivers and USB/RAID drivers too...

I know what drivers do and I already have the sound card driver. I downloaded the monitor drivers and it still doesn't work. I think I need something to install the VGA controller, without that the monitor drivers are worthless correct?

Windows can usually take care of monitor drivers, it's the video card drivers. Go to the dell site on the post above and download the video driver.
