Ok, im gtting an idea of what i would like for my 18th birthday coming up soon. I fancy a new monitor, answer the poll pleas, 2 semi-average-crappy 17" in a dual monitor setup, or 1 kick ass 21" single monitor set up...??

vote please, dragon

The single monitor would be better, higher resolutions, you are a little bit more limited but it would still be a ton better.

I would go for a 21inch CRT monitor, one of the newer ones though, so its nice and small in the back. If you get one with a highlight fetuare you will probally put it to more use then you think.

I say CRT, because any decent LCD will cost you twice as much as a CRT and proabally more. It's also VERY easy to find used CRT's for half price or less then LCD.

Ya but make sure your desk is 5 feet deep if you have the keyboard and mouse on top. I know for me my desk is like 1.5 feet deep, barely enough room for my keyboard and monitor. I would go lcd.

well, space is a limitation, one of the main reasons im swapping to TFT. And price is a big issue aswell, after looking around i think my budget would only go as far as a very good 19" widescreen. We're not exactly a rich family ya see, money is a big thing.

So after looking around ive found a 19" Widescreen TFT from ViewSonic (i heard they were good), 8ms response time, max res of 1440x900 (16:10 widescreen ratio) 500:1 contrast 300cd/m2 brightness

Do you play games on your PC? If you do, I would sersoisoly consider getting something under 8ms responce time.

It also has a low contrast ratio, which wont make it "bad" like the 8ms if you plan on playing games, it just wont be as "good" I like to look for at least 1:650

The brightness being 300 is a plus though :)

@bball4life - my 21' was only 2 inches bigger then my 17inch, It really depends on the exact model, newer ones are smaller, Also all you need is the base on the desk so you can move your desk out from the wall and have the rest hang off. It still takes up loads more room then a LCD of coarse but it's normally plenty duable.

@Rambo - Thats a 19inch normal screen in your link....Probally just copyed the wrong one?

Another thing to think about with LCD's is your resalution will most likley be stuck at 1280x1024(Unless your willing to pay a ton, which in your case you have already said your not) rather then 1792x1344 or higher.

Same as OMEGA, but not a widescreen, your games will look like crap, there just isn't enough stuff made for widescreen monitors yet.

"Yet", so you could say i was future proofing, lol... Ok, well, im budgeting here, 19" is still big, ive only ever had 15" CRT's and only ver recently got a 17" CRT, so 19" is still bigger than ive ever had..

@ Arm_Pit - I was at a LAN Party with a group of friends. Just at his house, one rich friend had a 2ms ViewSonic Screen, out of curiosity i played on that for a while... Then another not so rich friend had his TFT from a package deal with DELL, i dont know what model the screen was but it was 16ms response time, after laughing at him, i had a go on that one aswell, and honest to god i could not see a single difference, playing the same game at same res on same settings. I honestly couldnt tell the two screens apart in quality and so-called "ghosting", neither of them ghosted at all and both were crisp images moving freely.

So seeing as i dont have a large budget im not gonna go for 2ms, and because im not dumb im not gonna get 16ms, i figured 8 was quite good (or at least not bad)

I dont game that much, i love HL2 and play that a lot, but on my graphics card it not exactly done justice. I'm still failr ademant that the TFT i described above will be better overall than this 17" CRT im on

You should definatly have been able to tell the difference if those were the true MS times... Since OMEGA seems to be a well trusted member here, he evn once said he could see the difference between his 8 and i belive the other was 5 during gameplay.

If you dont play games that often then I wouldn't put it into deep consideration, but it would be nice. Birghtness is nice, reslatuions anr't bad for that size, the only complaint(since you say you dont play games to much, but if you think you would get into it more i would still suggest more faster then 8ms, maybe try some at a bestbuy to see what they are like some more) would be the low 1:500 contrast ratio

Just remember your not going to be uprgading your monitor very often(most likey) so it would be best to save(OR in your case for a present, maybe see if you can split it with your parents 80-20 or something, or get less other things as a sacrafice) a little more and get a little better one since your proabally going to have it for years.

You can also convice your parents to pay more since it will save on the electric bill compared to the CRT(Just dont mention its going to be about 2.50 $a month USD)

Also a lower repsonce time wont always cost that much more depending on the model, but for example at newegg(and i relise you cant buy from here, but its just for example purposes)
you can get 2ms monitors starting at 240$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...rtyCodeValue=0&Submit=Property&SubCategory=20
and they also have a 700:1 contrast, they are not widescreen though, but they are still all 19inches.
