Recently I have been having a problem where my monitor will shut off and won't come back on. If I power the monitor off completely and then turn it back on, my monitor will come back on for about a second and then turn off again. The thing is I can be using my computer for like an hour straight and it will be fine. Then if i walk away from my computer for like 5 minutes, the monitor will be off and I'll have the problem again. I have changed the settings so that my screen never turns off but still no luck. It doesn't seem like it's a problem with the monitor itself because it will work fine for an hour straight or so. What it seems like is that if the computer is inactive for a period of time, the monitor will shut off and then not want to stay on again. The way I get it working again is I power down and come back 20+ minutes later. Could it be a over heating problem? I dusted and vacuumed it 2 days ago so dust shouldn't be the issue. The computer is about 5 years old and I have no clue what the video card is if it even has one. Any ideas?

Monitor Shuts Off At Random Times

An old crt I trust now giving out on you! Unlike lcds that see upward of some 24,000 to even as high as 45,000 to 50,000hrs. of life at times crts see about 10,000 to 15,000 since the cathode usually goes if that outlasts other things.
After 4 11/2yrs. here an lcd started seeing similar problems where you had to keep turning it on and then off repeated for about a dozen times when first starting the system up in Vista. Forget it for XP there where some 50 times of repeating that eventualy saw the kick into standby mode problem end.
Your best and simple option is to replace the problem monitor there. Surprisingly crts still fetch a good price with the only one seen at newegg for less then $100 is an open box AOC 15" model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160128R
The next one up sees a $89.99 retail tag at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824160128

With old onboard video forget it! I recently restored a 9yr. old Dell model with only 6yrs. of use and couldn't use a 15" Phillips crt for that. Only the Dell crt that came with it would work!
If that was a custom build a newer model AGP card would help if needed however when going to replace the present monitor. But that would be the thing needed there.

With the lcd here I was seeing that when first starting the system up trying to get the old lcd here to stay active. Once the monitor warmed a little and was shutoff like for shutting the system down for a few minutes only the same problem was seen all over again.
There it seems the problem has a variation while still pointing at a continual problem until you replace it or send it in for repair. When you see it shutoff do you see the on light turn amber or nothing at all? Amber shows it is in a standby mode while completely off points at something going sooner rather then a constant annoyance.
The lack of activity seeing it go blank suggests it is going into a standby mode with the lack of signal detection when your system is ilde. In order words you may need to assign a screen saver to come on within a few minutes to keep this from happening. But still you may want to start planning sending it in for repair or going for a new if you didn't buy any extended warranty.

Do you reboot the computer when this happens? If you do and it works, then the fault is not the monitor, it's the computer. Put another monitor on it just to make sure, though.

The idea of using a screen saver will tell if you leave it going with that and still see a blank screen on return the video card would be the next suspect to look over. But with seeing it go blank at post time after a second or so?
Besides being an old system where any number of things could be going lcds can still see problems too. Have another monitor or system to see what happens when monitors are swapped if you don't simply have a spare lcd onhand that is?
