that would be great

Well the first one features 2x2W speakers while the second offers 2x1W speakers. Other than that I wouldn't expect much quality from monitor speakers. If he plans on listening to music or anything decent, I would definitely recommend even a cheap pair of speakers. Not only volume, but sounds quality. You can't get a full bodied sound coming out of a speaker that can fit into a monitor panel.

I don't know about all of those monitors - but I recently purchased a similar ASUS High Def 226H to the one you have listed. And I can tell you - the speakers in the monitor SUCK!!!!

I was looking forward to having no speakers on my desk. But after hearing the speakers on my new monitor - I chose to keep my 15.00 Logitech desktop speakers.

Count me out in terms of considering speakers when I choose a monitor. I"m under the impression that they're all pretty much junk.

Yeah, if you look at getting a simple 2.0 system (without subwoofer) you're looking at about 2 cables max; one for the auxiliary audio cable and one for the power. If you get monitor speakers, you're only eliminating the speaker power cable.
