monitor woes

My CRT monitor's display is really dark..
It's not so bad when I watch DVD's, cos PowerDVD has a BRIGHT setting, but when watching AVI's it really sucks.. When I connected my monitor to my sister's laptop and used both monitors simultaneously, hers showed fine and mine was still dark, so clearly it's not a graphics card issue, cos my PC only had onboard graphics.

So what do do? Do I go and buy and LCD monitor?
What I was really hoping to do is get a graphics card with TV out so I can watch my video files on the TV, will this solve my problems? the monitor is fine for everyday use.. J ust really dark when watching video files..
I tried messing around with the S3 graphics settings, brightness etc but no joy..
P.S I'm kinda clueless here o_O
 
I bought a geforce fx 5200 GPU, I'm watching my videos on my TV now :)
Iuse powerDVD or WMP.. but I'll give VLC a try when I get home today. When I was installing the driver for the card, I could see stuff on the TV screen that I couldn't see on my monitor.. Dunno why monitor is so dark. The background is just black on monitor, but on Tv screen you can see the logo in dark grey on the background too
