Monitor won't go in to stand-by

I just purchased a used monitor (Acer P221w) to use with my laptop. When I put the laptop in to sleep mode, the monitor stays powered up with a message that says "cable not connected".

I do have the VGA cabled connected.

I did have a different monitor connected to my laptop, and it worked fine.

Any thoughts?
 
some older monitors will not go in stand by mode when the video signal stops, you will have to manually switch it off.
