More Cores VS. Clock Speed

Hi all,

I will soon be buying a new processor for my PC, as I am on a budget I've decided to go with AMD. I recently came across these two:

AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 Black Edition 3.60GHz Quad Core Processor
AMD Bulldozer FX-6100 3.3 GHZ Six Core

These two a roughly the same price, so this got me wondering, is it better to have more cores or a faster clock speed? :)

Hi all,

All depends what you are planning with the computer. More cores is better for multi-application use, modern gaming (they use multiple cores) and multicore applications (such as video rendering).

Higher clock speed is the speed of the processor. So if you don't do multiple applications at ones, or processor demanding tasks, higher processing speed is better.

That being said, the difference between the 3.6 and the 3.3, if they are the same price, just go for the 6100. That 300Mhz drop, you aren't going to notice the difference. Seeing as more applications and gaming are utilizing multicore, 6 cores will come in handy for the future.

Yeah a 6300 would be your best choice. The 4100 and 6100 are an older technology than the 4300 and the 6300. Also depends on what you're doing. If you can afford it then go for the 6300 as it's better than any of these.

If you upgrade, it's definitely worth it to et the 6300, unless you're upgrading from a athon x2 then the 4100 wont be any improvement and the 6100 probably wont be much of an improvement, but the 6300 will be noticeably better.

What is your current specs or upgrade plans and what will it be used for exactly

I am upgrading an old PC I have lying around. It will be used mainly for music production/recording. Along with a new CPU I'm planning on upgrading the Motherboard aswell, possibly to an Asus M5A78L-M.
However, I'm open to suggestions if you would suggest a different mobo? :)

That bundle looks like a ripoff to me. Buy seperatly via ebay, usally you can find msrp. Get a FX 6300, A gigabyte AM3+ board, and 2 x 4GB 1600 Mhz ram.
