More Ram for Me?

I have a Gateway 500XL (P4 3.06ghz, 1 60gb and 1 250gb hd,)with only two slots for ram. I have 2x256 now, but want to get a 1gb stick and leave one 256 in. I'm pretty sure I can max out a 2gb (correct me if I'm wrong). This way I can get another 1gb stick or just run 1 1/4 gig for now. Any problems with that?
 
Yes you should be able to.

I currently run a 256Mb stick with a 1Gb stick and its fine.
 
I thought so, but wanted to make sure. By the way, I previoulsy bought pc 2700, but read that the gateway 500xl can use pc3200...since I already have the 2700, I guess I should stick with that?
