I have 8gb of ram and i want to add more how much can i use and what gains will i get, cheers.

Hi Russ,

What is it that you do, that needs more than 8GB of ram?
Unless you do some serious video editing or something then any more than 8gb of ram is not worth it....Does your system seem slow in anything?

Of course ram is cheap these days though so if you really want to get more, You need to tell us what Motherboard you have, and how many memory sticks you currently have installed.
Is it 2x4gb sticks or 4x2gb sticks?

This will tell you all the above needed...

Hi nev i have 4x2ram i play around with photoshop as well as play games.I was just curious thats as im upgrading m/board and processor and going crossfire.Hope you are keeping well.

So are you looking to upgrade your RAM as part of the motherboard/processor upgrade, or before? If you are upgrading everything at once, when you are buying a new motherboard the specifications will tell you how much RAM it supports. If you are looking to upgrade the RAM for your existing system, we either need the computer model number if it's a pre-built, or the motherboard model if it's a custom build.

Ordering Tuesday Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 (REVB3)SOCKET 1155 DDR3 PCI-EXPRESS.
Intel Core i5-2500 3.30 (Sandy Bridge) socket LGA 1155 Processor,Corsair Cooling Air Series A50 Performance CPU Cooler.Aastii my mate recommended for me.Is that what you need.

It supports 32 GB of RAM (4x8gb). If your not happy with 8 GB, then try 12 GB (2x4gb and 2x2gb) or 16 GB (4x4gb).
8GB sticks are severely overpriced at the moment, so I wouldnt suggest them.

What speed is your RAM right now? I would look at just getting high performance RAM 8GB... Like Wolfking was saying, i would go 12GB max.

Now you are getting technical with what speed the ram is,what i would like to know realy is what benefits would i get with more ram.As you must have gathered i know nothing about computers thats why i ask you people because i know i am in good hands.

With what you do, you won't see any benefits if you increase the RAM. Even with Photoshop you won't break past all 8GB. Save your money.

One thing I would do is open up the Task Manager and look at your utilization when you feel you are using up a lot of resources, it will tell you how much physical memory is used and how much is free, if you are using up almost all your RAM, then I'd say it would be worthwhile to upgrade to 4x4GB of faster RAM, seeing as how RAM is extremely cheap these days. Otherwise it's not worth it.

As OMEGA well pointed out, check to see why you're using so much RAM. If indeed i was looking to increase RAM, i would maximize my speed of the RAM first, then if i absolutely was having problems, increase the amount of RAM.
Voyager is right, you should not need more than 8GB. I have 8GB of Kingston DDR2 Value 1600mhz RAM and don't even touch 50% when encoding videos /while surfing the net watching YouTube Videos/ while on CF. So i highly doubt that you need more than 8GB.

If indeed you are having large consumption, no programs using much of the RAM, i would concider scanning for Malware infection or something of such.
