i have 512 and the max my motherboard can have is 4 GB

If you have 512MB, then yes, upgrading to 1-2GB will show an improvement.

But there could be other limiting factors. What CPU and video card are you using?

i have an intel pentium 4, 3.0 Ghz and a ATI radeon 9550

I would seriously look into upgrading your video card, thats partly why BF2 is lagging for you.
