most portable OS?

I am wanting to make a rescue hard drive. I was wondering what OS would be easiest to transition from computer to computer? I know windows XP freaks out when you change hardware so I was looking at either Windows 2000 or Red Hat. I know that drivers will have to be installed sometimes but I just wanted no fuss from the actual move to a new computer, drivers are no problem. I preferr Windows 2000 because I'm more familiar with Windows and all the comps i fix use windows but does anyone know of any problems if it is switched to diff comps?
Any suggestions?

Yep. When doing stuff like that, Windows is a non-option. Linux by design is really easy to run off a non-rewriteable medium, like a CD-R. Try Vector Linux. It does everything you can with a Windows system (w/o buying Windows), and you can run it off a CD-R. It has the KDE (Windows clone environment) and WINE (Windows application layer), so you can have the Windows look and feel AND run the occasional Windows app inside Linux.

...The rescue drive is not just an OS, it will have all the programs I need to diagnose any computer problem and fix them and many other things that new comps need. This will fill up a lot of space and will need to be updated constantly as newer and better software is made. It will also be a base to back up a computer if I need to reformat or anything and there is critical information on it. This is a 200GB drive with an external enclosure so I can even put it in comps that cant boot from USB. It will hold anything and everything I need to fix peoples comp problems and then some. This will not be the only use but a very important use. I will prolly dual-boot it with Linux and Win2000 and test them each out.

What your describing IS a Linux LiveCD. Most of them have special editions just for that.
