Most reliable external USB hard drive setup?

I have been using a Seagate 160gb external USB 2.0 hard drive to back up my data. I have had much confidence in this setup until tonight, the drive failed and according to the Seagate website, it is out of warranty.

Now I want a replacement. I am not really wanting to use another packaged drive but I will if they are most reliable. What I would rather do is buy an enclosure and install a drive, with a real warranty, inside.

So here are my questions:

Who makes the best external hard drive enclosure?

Who makes the most reilable packaged external hard drive?

Which system is most reliable?

Go for a Western Digital one....

But i would build you own.. i did... 160GB with no external power needed and i love it :D

wow...

and he responded

EXACTLY what i was thinking.

although your seagate died on you seagates has always been good to me. 5 year warranty for non enterprise drives aren't bad at all. for brands i'd say anything but maxtor and seagates made in china (the maxtor plant).

were your files heavily fragmented? on 24/7 without a fan? heat and fragmention decreases any drive's life.

If you are having the external drive is just being used a hard drive.. and not going walk about... then go and buy one you can put into the computer... but if you use it for say... work or school... and you take it places well of course you are going to need an external hard drive.
