Most User-Friendly Linux?

What version of Linux do you think would be the best for someone accustomed to Windows? Not for me as I'm not switching OS's but I have a build for a friend and I'm thinking of saving the 80 bucks for his sake.
 
I agree with Mep.

I enjoy Ubuntu the most over any other distro I've used (only 2 others haha)
 
mint is another good one for windows users and ive played a bit with zorin but havent heard a lot about it lately.
 
Linux Mint is what I'd recommend. Ubuntu is great as well, but Mint looks and acts more like Windows in my opinion.
Both are equally easy to use in terms on Linux, pretty much the same :)

Ubuntu or Mint are easy. That's actually what I used when I played with Linux. Easy to use, friendly UI, very stable.
 
I agree with you all on Ubuntu. I used to play around with it and I liked it a lot, but that was back in 2008 or so, and I know how quickly things can change in seven years. My main worry is that my boy won't be able to play minecraft properly. Will this be a problem on both Ubuntu/Mint?

Minecraft has a setup for Linux so it should be fine!

+ you'll have less background apps so it'll be slightly smoother
 
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is a very good Distro,the others maybe more eye candy, but for stability Ubuntu,i use it on my main PC with gnome flashback desktop,because i don't like Unity,but this is just a matter of easier to use.Unity is very good too.
Besides why use any Distro that has to go to Ubuntu repositories to get updated.

I also think if this distro or that distro works the best for your hardware, just go for it,remember old Pc's may not work with this or that Distro; that's important just to try what works the best.

Nobody is concerned over the fact that Ubuntu 14.04LTS is an open source operating system that utilizes targeted ads? It's spyware. Canonical should be ashamed of themselves.

If you MUST use a Linux distro...then you should give openSUSE a go. It offers you the option at install to either choose the "pretty UI" GNOME desktop (the one Ubuntu used before shelling it with Unity) or a utilitarian KDE desktop.

I killed Ubuntu 14.04 on this system with Windows 10 Pro Tech Preview because Linux genuinely felt like a cage. That is probably a resulting consequence of user error but I have been in Windows since they introduced NT and Pegasus e-mail was the newest and greatest achievement in web history.

Smart Scopes can be turned off in the privacy settings. If you use one of the other *buntu variants, you won't get them at all. Ubuntu Gnome will probably be my next choice.

Linux Mint will probably be the easiest transition from Windows since the desktop environment (cinnamon) closely resembles Windows 7. The standard download will also include the media codecs needed for playback of the restricted formats on Linux systems. They are easily findable in other distributions, but for a person new to Linux it saves them a few google searches.
 
I would hardly say ubuntu comes with built in spyware as you can turn it off with no repercussions. Android and iOS monitor their users far more and will not allow you to use features and function of the device without agreeing to the terms and conditions which include being able to sell information to other companies associated with them often referred to as associates. As I said I hardly say Ubuntu has "spyware", knowledge is power.

On the OP original question I would go with either Ubuntu if your looking for something modern or if your looking for that Linux stepping stone then I would recommend Ubuntu Mate, a desktop does not come any more straight forward then the original design of gnome 2.

On the subject of Minecraft, works fine in Ubuntu. I play this game quiet often and have seen no performance different between Ubuntu and Windows with this game. The only difference from what I seen is you are not required to have Java with the Windows installer whereas in Ubuntu you will need Java which I would at that point grabbing it from a PPA from the webupd8team. They are a reputable team and that ppa will help keep Java up to date.
