Motherboard and CPU suggestions?

I realize this sounds pretty generic and it is for the most part. I'm getting ready to dive into this section of my computer. I've done everything I want to do by way of simple add-ons but want to bring the mobo and cpu up to date. That also requires buying new memory. I'm thinking about a 64bit processor so I can get some life out of it. Any suggestions?

Additional information: I want to keep the mobo price between $120 - $160 and the CPU somewhere in the low hundreds as well. Memory is something I can price hunt on but I realize I should not buy generic, just inexpensive if I can find it. What do some of you use or suggest for this type of upgrade in this range?

Thanks for responding.

at least you narrowed down the mobo selection a bit...but CPU Intel or AMD? What's he going to do, buy a Cyrix, Motorola or SPARC?

For about $170 you can get a 939 Athlon64 3000+, or if you want a 754 a 2800+ is about $150

CPU - Intel or AMD
As opposed to a 68000? :P

What are you going to be doing with the system? I'd prolly reccomend the Athlon3000 (Socket754) and the MSI K8N Neo. ... the Athlon64-2800 if it exceeds the budget :)

LOL yeah .. and Intel doesnt quite have a 64bit part yet in that bracket either :)

Old system

Sorry I haven't been able to respond. I've been away from an internet connection for over a week now. The only thing that remains in my currently rebuilt system from my old computer is the mobo/cpu/memory. I now have a new case/power supply, video card, sound card, speaker/sub system. The only thing that remains is the guts of the system. I really appreciate the recommendations. The old system works fine as long as you don't attempt anything too taxing on the system. It was an old 8776c pavilion from HP. I upgraded all the drives and added memory as well. I saved all the old stuff, which is in perfect working condition, so I suppose I can keep it as a beater or donate it somewhere. Thanks again all and happy holidays.

I ended up going with the asus k8n along with amd 64 3000+. I haven't had the opportunity to run it through a round of testing but everything appears to be working well. I'm attempting to do a fair amount of video editing soon and so far I can't even compare its performance to my originial pc. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

Currently running:
ASUS K8N
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
1024 MB PC3200 DDR400
9600 All-in-wonder
200 gb, 160 gb, 60 gb, 40 gb HDs
Antec Sonata

I'm doing mostly multi media applications on this system so I figure I bought a little time before my next upgrade.
