hay, i am about to purchase a new motherboard and install it in my old computer. I was wondering does any of the hardware in my computer need to be compatible with the new motherboard (i know about the CPU).

Thx d_gamma1 :)

Not knowing what you've got or what your'e getting.
Maybe you have IDE now and new board supports SATA
Maybe you have AGP graphics card and new board is PCI Express

You have to find out what you have right now to see if its compatible. If you post what you have right now I'll tell you whether or not the motherboard will work. As of a few years ram switched to 240 pin, on the higher end ones. Close to 3 years ago it was 184 pin. So if your computer is old you'll end up replacing almost everything. The only way to keep the stuff you have now is to get an older model depending on how old it is.

ok, well i have:
2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
250.06 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
2048 Mbs Installed Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 7100 GS

Is this what you want to know??

Thx, d_gamma1

AM2 socket: I suggest getting those new chipset which support AM2+, in case you you want to upgrade in future.

Check about the CMOS updates if you plan to upgrade to the Phenom, Tomshardware had an article about it. Only the Asus boards worked with the Phenoms...

to answer daisymtc question:

i have AM2 socket
i have AGP slot
But im not sure if i have DDR or DDR2

so does this mean if i get a motherboard it has to fit the criteria above

DDR or DDR2, use a memory selector. Or, download and run PC Wizard. That should tell you. AM2 usually supports DDR2 though...

could you download CPU-Z
It should tell you what spec you currently have.

What is the main use of the PC?
What graphic card you currently have? It is not worth to get a board with AGP slot unless you have a really good AGP card.

Main use for pc = PC games
Graphics card = navidia Gforce 7100 GS
motherboard = Amd athlon 64X2 duel core processor 3600+

What is a Phenoms??
