Is there anyway to find out what type/model my mother board is? here's my situation:

I have an old windows 98 PC that I want to upgrade for gaming. I plan on getting a new graphics card, cpu, harddrive, and memory. I have windows XP to put on it. I was just wondering if there would be any compatibility issues with these and my motherboard, and also if anything else is needed to add. Any suggestions for any of the above products are also welcome. If you need any more information, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance.
 
well, if it's an old 98 box, then chances are it's either a P3 or lower or an Athlon K6. Those sockets (slot) are discontinued and it will be hard to find anything higher then a 1 GHz chip for it. The board is also not going to be a PCIE board and if it is AGP, it will be AGP 1. Again, discontinued harware, so finding a G-card will be difficult. You can still find PCI g-cards pretty readily, but they won't hold up to gaming.

You can hit windowbutton +r (or start button...run) and type in dxdiag and it will tell you the make and model of your mobo. I'm not saying it can't be upgraded, but chances are you won't be able to get it to the level needed for current games.
 
well your memory is going to be outdated. Your HD would probably transfer fine, but HD's are fairly cheap right now. I'd just build a new system, throw a stripped down OS on the old system and use it as a file server
