Hi there. I am new to hardware, i wanna build a computer for my experiments, that can run Windows Xp at least. AS i cant afford expensive PC for my Electrical experiments, so i decided to make one for myself by collecting the standalone parts from USED SHOPS.

First thing in making computers is Motherboard, so i was thinking what to look for? Is there any thing i need to look into old Motherboards (ofcourse they will be cheap and easily available on USED SHOPS) that can run Windows Xp?

Some guidelines on buying the Motherboard please?

Without knowing specifics of what you expect or are going to do with the system:

AMD socket A:
Duron 1.8ghz or above
Athlon XP 1.8ghz or above
Sempron 1.8ghz or above

Intel socket 478:
Pentium P4 2ghz or above
Celeron 2.2ghz or above (personally I would stay away from celerons if possible)

Any of these should be able to support at least 1gig DDR ram.
Use 7200rpm IDE drives at a minimum.
Stay away from any MB pulled from a Dell as the BIOS in those things SUCK.

NOTE: none of the above are going to run XP blisteringly fast or be able to run seriously high end applications or games. But for the most part they will run internet and 90% of the GP applications (office, quicken, DVD and lightweight photo editing, CD burning and the like) without too much trouble.

If you can afford a few extra bucks try to get at least socket 775 intel or am/am2 amd boards that will support dual core processors and DDR2 ram if you want a bit more flexibility as these will support SATA drives and higher end Video cards if that is a criteria.

If you can afford it Socket 775 is the way to go. See if you can get a motherboard that supports Pentium 4's and Core 2 Duo's (at least up to the E6xxx series) as a duo is way better than a pent 4, and you can find used c2d's on ebay for next to nothing. I got my E4500 for $60 AU and got it to 3ghz without too much trouble.

thanks for the replies. One more question.

How to check whether the motherboard supports Socket 775? Is there any indication on the motherboard?

It will be listed in the description/title of the motherboard, or listed on the box if you buy from a store.

Also, if you look at the motherboard, where the CPU socket is it will be printed on the PCB.

Would not buy it if you are gaming. you need a board that uses DDR2 and has at least one PCI-E 2.0 X16 slot.

Then again if your are not gaming it's pretty good, but DDR2 is still pleny faster than DDR.

BTW whats your say on this motherboard.

I wouldnt buy that new period, 865 series chipsets are ancient, Socket 478 is a dead socket and will at most support a 3.4GHz single core CPU. A Celeron 430 1.8GHz is faster than that. It says "powered by cutting edge technologies" for 2003 :P

Linkin93 also pointed out that also lacks PCIe and DDR2. Definitely not worth your money.

Edit: This http://www.dealtime.com/xPO-Gigabyt...P45-LGA775-Socket-UDMA133-Serial-ATA-300-RAID would be a better motherboard from the same site, P45 chipset is pretty decent and popular, cant go wrong there.

BTW can you please tell me the max. price for the following used components

Gigabyte socket 775 Motherboard (Any type)
MSI socket 775 Motherboard (any type)
CPU 3.0GHZ minimum
DDR RAM
harddisk SATA may be if motherboard supports that

Thanks in advance

Biostar isn't known for making quality motherboards. Also an obsolete Pentium 4 Processor for $50 is not worth it. Take a look at this incomplete computer component list I compiled with a processor that would smoke any Pentium 4:

AMD Athlon II 240 Regor Dual-Core Processor - $59

thanks for the reply, but i wanna go for Intel not AMD. And as i need it for my projects, so its ok even if i dont have very huge HDD

If you want to go Intel take a look at the Intel Celeron E1500 Dual-Core Processor for $50. It has more than twice the processing power of any Pentium 4.
