Motherboard Help ( first timer, asus p6t )

E Money

This is my first time building a computer. I got all of my GE courses out of the way and I just started my routing/network courses so its finally time that i actually need a computer so i can use programs like PacketTracer. The Asus P6T Intel X58 Core i7 is the current motherboard im looking at. Im not looking to go over $250 motherboard wise, but if you feel you know a better motherboard please let me know. Do you know if this is atleast a decent motherboard? Most of the reviews i have read seem to be pretty good with the exception of very few low ratings

Plans:
Case- Mozart TX
CPU- i7
HDD- 500GB or 1TB
Ram- 4 GB
PSU- 500w ( does name brand play a big role in power supply or no??)
I can only seem to find external cdrom drives online, so i guess ill have to head to the store to find a internal...

As i said, its my first time. If this board is designed for people who intend to do more with their system, please let me know. I dont want to shell out 250 on a mobo for nothing. Also, if i happen to be missing a key component in my plans, please let me know. Any advice is appreciated...

The only "error" I see is you listed 4Gigs of RAM.

LGA 1366 motherboards run Triple Channel memory, so you run them in sets of 3, not 2 like Dual Channel boards.

Basically you need 3x1Gig, 3x2Gig, or 6x1Gig or 6x2Gig.

Not that you'd probably ever need more than 6Gigs.

Anyway, the P6T is a solid board, but if you don't ever plan on running more
than one graphics card or overclocking much, there are many other alternatives for less money.

Here's a few under $200

Your the first to ever tell me to go higher bigrich. Usually everyone says i could go lower and that 500 is more than enough. Ill look into it some more

Yea, that was a mistake. I meant to say 6GB. I want to get the OCZ DDR3. I know they come with heat spreaders but should i still buy a fan for them?

Also, is the stock fan that comes with the i7 decent?

In all honesty i plan on going ape s*** ( are we allowed to cuss here?? lol ) once i learn more about computers. Thats my main reason for getting the Mozart case. I wanted the pt6 board because it will hold me over for now and quite a bit in the future when i want to upgrade. Plus with everything so far my PC gaming experience should be good. The pt6 im getting doesnt come with the SLI option. I figured by the time im ready to mess with that ill be upgrading alot of other parts to.

Im already putting up a little bit more then a grand for the build. Im in college and my Rx7 just got impounded ( F*** CHP ) so i need to start saving for another car. Thanks for the info guys...

You don't need a fan for your RAM, just good case airflow.

The stock 1366 cooler is fine if you don't plan to overclock the cpu.

The Asus P6T does indeed allow SLI, as do all the X58 motherboards,
so looks like you can save some money after all. :good:
