I am not a gamer, but really push a pc hard processing photos and video. I am a full time photographer and the pc is running multiple programs all the time.

My number one needs are.

Speed, Dependability, Storage SATA 3.0, I run several HD's

I also need firewire.

I would like an external SATA connector but not a MUST have.

Is the Asus rampage a good buy, or is it way overkill for what I want.

The price is overkill while the specifications are adequate. Many Asus as well as models by other makes see 6-8 sata ports available. Make sure the power supply is large enough however to see the number of matching power connectors however.

The sata drives are Sata type II seeing 3gb per second transfer rates there. The new external drives come in usb only, usb/firewire, usb/eSata, and even usb,1394/eSata.

The preferred for most is eSata which simply plugs into an extension cord going to a sata port on the board itself by way of an PCI adapter card or port on the case itself. Some are now seen in 2terabyte capacities.
