Motherboard Issue

Just built a computer for a friend of a friend. I had it completely together.
My Problem: When i powered the computer up it powered up normally. But it would not post screen. Then shortly after i heard one long beep. I found that the motherboard has one long beep continuously due to the graphics card not installed correctly. Ive put in 20 or so video cards. I know its seated properly.

Could it be something else? My guess is a doa motherboard. Just a bad pcie slot.

btw i tryed two video cards(one i know is perfect working condition) in the motherboard same problem. I also tryed both of the 6 pin powers on the psu. I would swap out all the parts to my motherboard but its amd and i have intel based machine. Basically i can test the video card, ram, psu.

If it's Award BIOS and the video card was bad it would be one long and two short beeps.

Make sure that RAM is seated good and check all of your capacitors, especially the capacitors near the PCI slots, RAM slots, and controller chips. Usually a bad CPU beep is high frequency so if you judge this as being high frequency then check the CPU, make sure your pins are straight and none are missing.

Also, if the machine has two sticks of RAM try either stick with the other removed.

It actually has 4 sticks of memory. The booklet describes the long beep continuously as the video card installed unproperly.

EDIT: i read in the awesome foreigner made manual that the mobo is init default is pci.. would it go to pcie if no pci was detected?

Hmm...Okay, that motherboard is a strange case. What brand/model is it?

It should default to PCI-e(without integrated graphics), if it doesn't then it's definitely one weird motherboard. And even with that said, most motherboards' BIOS have an automatic configuration for video so it will utilize whatever has a monitor connected.

I know i found that strange too. I looked at the reviews on newegg and it seems that no one else has had the problem i am having. Not even the 1 egg reviews.

I also pulled out my manual to my motherboard that is also gigabyte. Its default is pci as well.

What motherboard are you using?
Take the video card and and make sure it's seated correctly.
Also make sure the power cable is plugged into the card.
It may beep if the power isn't plugged in.

everything was seated correctly power was plugged in fan on the video card was spinning....the card is an asus 4850. has the 6 pin on it that was plugged in. I also tryed an 8500gt that has no power besides what the motherboard gives. both ended up in the long beep that repeats every 30 seconds or so.

It sounds like to me that the board is shot. I hate to be so quick to jump to that conclusion but if it's that difficult to figure out then it's most likely the board.

Could be memory. The fastest way to find out is to remove the video card and plug your monitor into the onboard video. If it still doesn't boot then you know it wasn't the video card - or at least it wasn't the video card in the PCIE slot.

Yeah that would be great....if it had an integrated video chip.

Sorry if I am too late, but I had the exact same issue. Even though the beeps indicate a video problem, it is NOT a video issue. Don't be fooled into thinking it is a video issue. It is a memory issue. This board is extremely picky about RAM. I tried three different kinds of RAM that were tested OK in other systems. No dice.

I recommend you use the following RAM.
G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM

This is the RAM that finally worked on this board for me.

I tried three working video cards, two different power supplies, two different CPUs, three different kinds of RAM and countless other combinations. All of these hardware combinations were tested OK in other systems. It was driving me nuts.

After running all these tests with known good hardware, I concluded that the board was bad and I RMA'd it. After I got the replacement board, it gave the exact same beep error! So, unfortunately, I RMA'd a good working board!

After all that work and RMAing good hardware, it ended up being nothing more than a memory compatibility issue.

I hope this helps.
