Hello, i am new to this forum and well custome computers altogether, i have had an alienware computer for about 1 year now, and just installed a water cooling system, and well lets say its not quite stable. so incase of needed a new computer i have built a spec list for a custome made,

Just i am missing a motherboard and don't know what kinda one to get

this is what i want to install onto it

IntelCore Core i7-980x (3.33ghz 12mb 6.4gt/sec
win 7 ultimate 64
Two 1.5gb nvidia GeForce gtx480
12gb 1600mhz (3x4gb) tri channel monory
three 300gb 10krpm hdd
16x dvd+/- rw
killer xeno pro network card
soundblaster fxi titanium pci card

Arh thankyou very much :), that all adds up to about £3000, and the same spec computer on alienwares website is £5800, grossly over prices!

but thats for looking for me :) this is a nice site for help :) you were quick to respond thanks so much :)

Yeah alienware is overpriced. And your very welcome. Let me know how that goes for you. And just post here if you need any more help :)

Motherboard of the computer is chosen depending on two component.
1. Compatibility with other components of the PC
2. Scalability of the connection:

It should be the same stuff. But I would make sure by either calling the company or waiting for someone else to reply on here. But I'm guessing it's the same.

I would regret the amount of money spent on this system. You can get a really powerful Core i7 Quad-Core Processor for about a third of the price. The Core i7 980X just isn't worth what Intel wants for it presently.

Computer technology just doesn't hold any value.

The following processors are very powerful and are 1/3 of the cost in price over the i7 980X Processor. The below processors will also work with the ASUS Rampage II GENE Socket LGA 1366 Motherboard:

Core i7 930 Bloomfield Quad-Core Processor

Core i7 920 Bloomfield Quad-Core Processor

I would rather wait for sandy bridge and bull dozer but thats just my opinion.

So the motherboard ASUS RAMPAGE III would be a good choice.
and Why dont you go for an ATI HD 5970 and also which sound card are you going for.

P.S - Another thing if you are buying that motherboard for Gaming it is just isint worth it go for An AMD 1090t or the Intel Core i7 930

id avoid the intel boards, as socket 1366 is going away...which is why price drops are happening...which gives me more reason to support AMD...intel keeps leaving people high and dry upgrade path wise...its annoying. 775 was a bit of a dead end...so is 1366 and looks like 1156 will be the same story... with am3 you have a possibility of upgrade in the future.

also recommend a single card solution, none of these dual gpus on one card seems appealing to me, get a 5870 if you feel the need to, otherwise just buy a 5850...its pretty damn close in performance to a 5870...

No i would any day prefer an 5870 if I have the budget its a lot better than the 5850 and also is only 10% slower than the best card Nvidia offers.

agreed...intel will leave you high and dry with socket 1366 if you do go that route...their screwing people over with the socket games ._. amd would leave you with some upgrade potential, but performance isnt nearly as high as the intels, just you would have to accept the possibility of throwing everything out and starting scratch when the parts became inadequate

What socket games? what you mean 1156 and 1366? The 1156 is more for the mainstream average joes while the 1366 is more of a higher performance socket. You know nothing about Intel, so do not try to your "trash talk" with it.

buddy your obviously biased, look at the price drops on socket 1366, its getting discontinued with sandy bridge coming...which means any upgrade paths with those chips is going to go away, you have to admit that the am2 > am2+ > am3 path is more promising than a dead end with 1366 going away probably in the next few months
