Motherboard Problem?

I have an HP ze4500 notebook that recently bit the dust completely, there are no signs of life anywhere on this machine with the exception of the battery meter which is showing a fully charged battery. I have ruled out the power supply because the power supply ran my other laptop for 20 minutes with no problems. When the PS is plugged in, lights on the front of the computer are supposed to light up, this does not happen. Is this a motherboard issue? I want to fix it because we don't have enough money to buy a new one and my girlfriend really needs it for college. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Alan

If you yanked out the power supply and used it somewhere else and it' worked, then yes, most likely it's the motherboard. But they dont sell just the motherboard at some local shop. You'll have to contact HP for it... unless you know a chop shop that sells them. There are places that will sell new panels and power supplies and things in that nature, but not a lot of places will carry the mainboard, since they are mostly custom to a specific model's chassis.

I have been reading on some other forums about an issue with the power jack on the rear of the computer. Some say that this issue can cause spontaneous power downs and such. However, the meter on the side of the battery says that it is fully charged. This leads me to believe that I don't have a power jack issue unless there is some sort of switch in the jack that lets the computer know when the PS is plugged in. As for motherboard replacment, I am most likely going to turn to ebay as my source, I have found some on there for much less than the price that HP would charge.

If your power meter is working and the battery is charging, your power supply should be fine. As for eBay as a source, that's fine too. I got a brand new HP panel off of there for about 60% of the cost of a new one.
