I'm building my own computer for the first time.
How will I know if my selected motherboard (Asus M3N78 PRO Motherboard) will work with all the other stuff that I want to use??

Go to Asus official website and look at the spec.
Or tell us your budget and use of PC, we will guide you through.

Ok. The specs which I selected:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition Processor
Motherboard: Asus M3N78 PRO Motherboard
HDD: Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3GB/s 320GB Hard Drive
Case: Power Up 5511 Silver ATX Mid-Tower Case
DVD: Lite-ON IHAS220-08 SuperAllwrite SATA 20x DVD Burner with Lightscribe OEM

A few questions:
  1. On TigerDirect it states that the DVD burner has a width of 5.7"
but the CPU case I picked only has 5.25" and 3.5" Drive Bays.
    Will the DVD burner fit??
  2. My CPU Case comes in with 2 fans.
Do I need to get another fan for my CPU?
  3. How can I be sure that all the components will work together?

That's all for now. Will appreciate your help.

All of that will work. I use the same mainboard for my Phenom 9550. It is a good one. To your questions.

1. All DVD drives are 5 1/4 form factor. Fitting will not be a problem

2. 2 case fans is plenty. The CPU will arrive with its own cooling fan. It is part of the product.

3. Everything will work fine. The board you chose has plenty of on board I/O.

I have been reading alot of bad reviews about Asus boards lately.

Is the Asus M3N78 Pro a good Motherboard? Does Anyone have that board so they could tell me their opinion on the board?

I actually think i'm going to go the Intel route rather than AMD.

the reviews vary from site to site

I don't read reviews but I've been installing ASUS boards in computers since 1986. The last time I had a bad one was about 9 years ago. I've installed over 30,000 of them. So it begs the question. What is important in a mainboard - reliability? The attitude of snot nosed internet reviewer trying to make a name for himself?
