motherboard recognises only 1gig

I'm a little confused. What did you have in there before? And what do you have now? Also, when you say it only finds 1 gig, is this according to the BIOS or Windows?

does the motherboard have 4 physical slots or did you take 1 stick out? it could be the onboard graphics using some memory.

so you had 1 stick of 512 mb installed and are trying to install another 2 sticks 512 mb each?

i have 2 slots, 1 has 1g, other has 512mb.(i had before just 1g(512 x 512))
in bios it says

installed memory: 1024mb/pc400 sdram
memory bank1: 1024mb ddr2 sdram
memory bank2: not installed (512mb is in this slot)

i ran DxDiag in 'run' and it says i have only 1g of ram
i have XP pro SP3

more info

i have 2 slots, first has 1g, second has 512mb (i had 1g before(512 x 512))
in bios its says

installed memory: 1024 mb/pc2400
memory bank1: 1024 mb ddr2 sdram
memory bank2: not installed(512mb is in this slot)

i used dxdiag in 'run' and it says that i only have 1g.
my OS is XP pro with SP3

Get a flashlight in there and see if you have any bent pins in where that second slot of RAM is. If the stick of RAM isn't making full contact with the stick of RAM, then it won't be recognized by the BIOS, and then in turn Windows.

heres another link about my mobo, under memory upgrade info, it says approved 2gigs(i dont know why its only 1gig for me)

i dont think theres something wrong with the second slot(i had 1gig in there before(512 x 512)) working fine, shouldnt bios say

installed memory: 2048 mb/pc2400(allowing 2gigs max)

instead of

installed memory: 1024 mb/pc2400(allowing 1gig max)

im not a computer wiz so im not sure if im correct

ive swapped the rams around, second slot works fine... ive also done a bios update and still nothing

What is the speed of both of these sticks your trying to run together. I noticed you said in your post it had PC2400. The board is suppost to have PC2 4200/DDR2 533. Your not trying to run two way different speed and voltage sticks. Freaking out the HP board.

soz stranglehold, i typed it incorrectly, its installed memory is PC2 4200

ive put my original setup of 1g(512 x 512) and in bios theyre both recognised as

installed memory: 1024/pc2 4200
memory bank1: 512 ddr2 sdram
memory bank2: 512 ddr2 sdram

maybe they different speeds... so i might put 2g(1x1)of the same speed, to see if it works...

thx stranglehold

Glad you got it going. If you have two way different speed/timing/voltage sticks, OEM board dont play as well as aftermarkets one.
