Motherboard standoffs

hi

I wanted to upgrade my computer so I bought a socket 939 board and CPU.

When I removed the old motherboard from the case, I noticed that the case only had one brass standoff and at the other points it was just screwed in directly.

The old system worked perfectly and was stable, but I decided I should get more brass mounts as I hear it is not safe to screw in directly.

I put more brass mounts in, but the motherboard would not "fit" when they were in as I could not get the ports to match up with the I/O shield. Without the brass mounts, it matched up perfect.

So, I am currently running the board on just one brass mount where it was needed because of a "dip" in the case. The system is running cool and is stable in prime95. Obviously I made sure that the board was not touching the case other than where it is screwed in of course.

Is this OK or is it likely to cause problems?

Aslong as you are sure that when/if you move your baseunit that the motherboard isnt going to flex in anyway that the bottom of the board is going to touch with the internal's of the case otherwise will damage your motherboard. If i was you I wouldnt rely on one standoff! to risky...

Hi thanks for the reply

Do you have any idea why I could not get the board to line up with the I/O shield when the standoffs were in? It's a standard socket 939 board and a standard case but I could not get it to line up.

Also, I think I have a grounding problem because sometimes I "hear" noises such as mouse movements, hard disk and CD ROM activity in the audio. I think this could be related to this standoff issue.

I have had a couple of cases that the board plate did not use standoffs, the holes in the plate were raised, pre formed standoffs, but they had raised standoffs where their were not holes in the board, I just put electric tape over those to keep it from grounding to the board!

Thanks for all the replies so far.

StrangleHold, just to clarify, you put electrical tape over the raised "pre-formed" standoffs, or the regular brass mounts? But I definitely can see what you mean though! Did you actually screw the board into these pre-formed holes like I did?

Bootup05, yes, it definitely is strange, but I'm sure those "I/O noises" are coming through the sound as when I mute the "CD audio" line in or disconnect the audio cable from the CD drive, they go away.

I'm not sure whether this is because I have the board screwed in like I have, or whether there's something else at fault. But, since it goes away when I mute the cd audio, out of sight, out of mind I guess :S

Yea you screw it straight to the plate, the olny ones you put tape on are the ones there is no hole for in the board
