I am changing the motherboard on an HP computer. I talked to HP and they said I need to get the new motherboard "tattooed" for windows to work correctly.(aka: activation) Is this really neccesary? Has anyone here doen this before?

Sounds like they mean they have to change something on the motherboard (probably the BIOS), for the computer to recognize the new motherboard as an HP. If you dont get it done, it most likely wont boot. But if you have a Windows CD (not from HP), then you can just reinstall it and it will work fine.

Will it boot into windows

If you want to use an HP Windows disk then you'll probably need the "tattooed" mobo. If you use a generic mobo and a generic Windows disk, you'll be fine. The only thing HP about your PC then will be the case!

it will boot to windows but your windows restore disks or image wont work cos the DMI information on the board wont match what the installer is looking for. What they will need to do is change the DMI information in your motherboard's BIOS to allow your system to use its restore disks
